Since October 2018, John Wante is responsible for strategic policy planning in the department waste and materials management of OVAM, the Flemish Public Waste Agency. OVAM is responsible for establishing the general framework of waste policy in Flanders. John has been working on making the shift from waste to materials management by translating this into new legal instruments and other policy tools, focusing more on smarter design, prevention, reuse, circular business models and recycling. He is involved in strategic planning of environmental policy and establishing the link with climate and economic policies. Between 2010 and 2018 he was head of the policy innovation unit of OVAM. Between 2003 and 2010 he participated in European decision making on waste legislation and collaborated with the OECD on studies on sustainable materials management. Since 2013 he collaborates with the European Environment Agency on reports on circular economy.
